G-Dragon (real name: Kwon Ji-Yong, age 23) is part of an idol group Big Bang. He debuted as the leader of the group in 2006, followed by hit songs: Lies, Haru Haru, Tonight and many more. Every time they release a song, whether it is on or offline, the music charts are in their grasps. They are one of a few idol groups known to be able to all-kill music charts with all their album songs.
However, G-Dragon is NOT just an idol. He’s Big Bang’s hit song composer, lyricist, and producer. He also has a high sense in fashion, so is well known for being a fashionista, and also for being a trend setter.
Many agencies say that G-Dragon has a special talent along with his decent looks and dance skills, that he is several levels beyond regular idols. On April 22nd he met with Young Children Culture Icon and had his first interview with them. We have been told that Big Bang will have performances in Japan next month starting on the 10th for about a week.
Q. Aren’t you afraid of the after shocks that are occurring in Japan?
A. “Honestly saying, I’m really afraid. But the fans in Japan, regardless that we are artists from a different country, love us and support us. Just because something big has happened over there, it doesn’t make sense to just wrap everything up.”
Q. On one interview you said, “We’re going to Japan because we feel like a true musician there, they treat us well, as if we were artists”. What does that mean?
A. “In Japan, even though we are new artists, they just accept our different color and rate us highly. But in Korea, for a long time, artists or singers mean differently along with idols. Just to get an album out, you must go to talk shows and different variety programs and it really gets into the business sense, not the meaning of an artist. I’ve only learned about music but when I became a singer, I realized that you can’t survive this game with just the knowledge of music.”
Q. Between singer, composer, lyricist, and producer, which do you love doing most?
A. “Singer. Whether the ratings are good or bad, [singing] is the most thrilling.”
Q. You’ve been in the entertainment business since your early 10′s. Do you ever feel like you’ve lost anything or feel like you’re missing something?
A. “A long time ago, I was really sad because I didn’t get to hang out with friends or meet up with my girlfriend even. I’ve thought when I was a trainee, ‘What if I don’t get to what I’ve been dreaming for, how will I ever face my parents and how will I live my life?’ After passing that stage, we got the album ready and officially debuted. I didn’t even get the chance to look back, all we can do is look forward with the time on our watches. Already 10 years have passed living like that.”
Q. What do you think of Korea’s idol agency system?
A. “I’m 23 years old right now, but for half of my life I’ve only trained and practiced. If you practice for 10 years, it will take 10 years to fall apart, if you train for 5 years, you will fade away in 5 years. I’ve been able to practice for about 10 years now, I think it will go in about 10 years. If someone asks you to sing a song, as a singer, you have to be able to sing on the spot. If you want that to happen, I believe that you have to practice at least 4-5 years without rest any day.”
Q. Did you hate study?
A. “I think that school and studying is really important. You may not believe it, but I wasn’t a bad student. The company made me study whenever we had midterms and finals. Depending on the results of the tests, if your scores didn’t pass a certain score, then for the next week you weren’t allowed to practice or train, you weren’t allowed to attend practice even. I’ve never had to sit out from practice.”
Q. What does music mean to you, G-Dragon?
A.”Music is ME. There’s no other explanation.”
Q. What makes music good?
A. “Music that can move ones heart is a good song. Even if you can’t sing, if you are able to move a listener’s heart, that is great influential music. If a person who just broke up with his girlfriend was sitting in a tent, drinking soju and sang songs, and people who were passing by him felt sad, even that is great music.”
Q. Out of hip hop, R&B, electronic and many more genres, which do you feel most attracted to?
A. “For now it is hip hop. It may seem arrogant of me, but I think that someone who does hip hop can also do other genres, like classic, or rock and many other types of songs. It’s because in hip hop, there are no set rules. That’s why there are sometimes nonsense stuff that comes out of hip hop.”
Q. When you compose, what do you think most importantly?
A. “A new feeling. While thinking of lyrics and concepts, I think of Big Bang’s fans. I stand in their prospective and think what is best suited for Big Bang and compose that way.”
Q. You get a lot of comments saying that you are the best fashionista.
A. “I really love it. Except I really have no deep meaning in my outfits. But I do have a dream. Not a business but I want to try something with clothing.”
Q. Are you currently dating?
A. ” I always think that I’m in a relationship. But there is no one, I can’t meet anyone. But if I do, I will not hide it, it’s just that the rest of you don’t know of it” (laughs).”
Q. There has been some groups that separated because of money issues, but Big Bang signed a contract recently with the agency of 5 years?
A. “If the agency was unstable or wasn’t able to support us, I would have given up being a singer already, or moved to a different agency but…as you can see, I have no problem with the agency.”
Q. Do you want to say anything to hoobae (junior) idols?
A. “(thinking for a while) I want to be a dream for many people. When people look at me I want them to say, ‘I want to be a singer like G-Dragon’. New rookies now think ‘I am a singer’, they probably feel embarrassed when they look at sunbae (senior) idols. Feeling that embarrassment is a good way to focus on yourself more and become a stronger person.”
